Maine Interfaith Power & Light
Since 2003 Maine Interfaith Power & Light has set aside a portion of its revenues in a special fund to provide grants to faith groups and others for increasing energy efficiency and conservation, or the adoption of renewable energy technology. Grants totaling over $10,000 have been made to various projects, under this program.

In 2008, Maine Interfaith Power and Light awarded five faith communities with $500 each to assist with energy conservation and carbon reduction projects in their places of worship. Looking for innovative and practical ways for faith groups to reduce heating and lighting use, Maine Interfaith Power & Light fielded applications for the 5 mini grants from communities across the state.

The 2008/2009 Carbon Challenge winners were:

The First Universalist Church in Dexter which insulated its church office and vestry and used the space for winter services.

St Luke’s in Wilton which installed three programmable thermostats and insulated areas of severe energy loss.

The UU Church of Saco-Biddeford which installed doors at the base of a stairway to prevent heat from escaping upstairs.

The First Universalist Church of Yarmouth which installed a programmable thermostat; weather stripped their window and doors; and replaced their exit signs with ultra efficient LED lit signs.

Trinity Church of Lewiston which installed specialized fans to efficiently distribute heat in their sanctuary.
