 Mars Hill Wind Farm turbines

Maine Interfaith Power and Light has partnered with the Mars Hill Wind Farm in northern Maine to offer Maine Wind Watts renewable energy certificates (RECs).

Maine Wind Watts are created when wind power generated by the Mars Hill Wind Farm is "unbundled" or substituted for traditional power. Maine Wind Watts represent the environmental benefits or savings in carbon dioxide and other pollutants that occur when clean power from wind replaces burning fossil fuel.

Maine Wind Watts may be purchased to offset electricity or travel.

MARS HILL WIND FARM

The 42-megawatt wind farm is driven by 28 turbines

Mars Hill Wind Farm produces enough clean, renewable electricity to power approximately 20,000 New England homes annually. This ensures that about 65,000 tons of carbon dioxide, a major global warming gas, is otherwise prevented from being released into the atmosphere from a fossil fuel powered source such as coal.

Currently, wind power costs a little more to produce and develop than coal or natural gas powered generation. However, as wind power has the added value of being 100% renewable, sustainable, and free from pollutants, these 'environmental benefits' can be quantified and sold as credits, thereby making wind power cost competitive."

Through a partnership with Maine Interfaith Power and Light and through their innovative Wind Watts program, we can now publicly offer credits from our Mars Hill Wind Farm project. Purchases of  credits through the Wind Watts program is one way the residents of Maine can "cast a vote" for clean power development in Maine.

The more credits sold, the more level the energy playing field and the more likely future investment in renewable energy projects as opposed to fossil-fuel energy projects. We believe that there is enormous potential for wind power in Maine, as evidenced by our Mars Hill Wind Farm, and we see the people of Maine as our long-term partners in our effort to increase the region's sources of clean and renewable energy. Together we can make wind power possible.
