You can offset the polluting effects of your energy use by supporting the
development of clean renewable energy. Most traditional power generation relies
on burning fossil fuel. Every time we replace existing power with wind, solar or
another renewable resource, your electricity pool becomes a little cleaner and
that benefits everyone.
What is a REC?
For every kilowatt hour of
electricity a clean power facility generates, a REC for one-kilowatt hour is
generated. A clean power facility can sell both commodities together as
"renewable electricity" or sell the electricity as "generic" electricity to one
buyer and the RECs to other buyers.
Because all delivered electricity
is the same, ownership of RECs and an equal amount of ANY electricity is legally
deemed to be ownership of renewable electricity. Simply put, you continue buying
electricity from your utility and purchase RECs to claim renewable power use for
your home or business. RECs will NOT replace your current electricity, but
rather offset any carbon emissions generated as a result of your use.
